Artists Statement
My work focuses on highly stylized design-based imagery, usually representing isolated figures, disjointed from their surrounding environment. By emphasizing large areas of space, I find the works begin to build a complex and immense variable narrative that can alter from viewer to viewer. With each painting I try attain an underlying tension, or unconscious dialogue between the image and the audience. I’m curious about the uncertainty that exists within the emptiness, forcing the viewer to question, “What lurks within these vast areas of void?” Reflecting animated illustration and adopting principles from current Graphic Art, my aim is to create works that float between the recognized and familiar, into a realm of cautious questioning. The intention is to create a dualistic reaction by drawing in the audience through their relationship with the familiar only to force them to retreat and begin to question their initial motives of attraction by manipulating their association with recognition. The work focuses on a number of themes ranging from ritual or ceremonial, to a nostalgic aesthetic of child-like innocence combined with fanciful sardonic humour. “Jamie Boys adopts a boy’s-own style to address the age-old theme of innocence corrupted”.
